Digital marketing for Port Jefferson, New York.
Search, advertising, website and reputation work for businesses in Port Jefferson village, where a cross Sound ferry route carries over a million passenger trips a year into a downtown that has written national chains out of its own plan.

A harbour village that runs on arrivals.
The village puts its visitor traffic at over 800,000 a year. Against a census population of 8,306, that is a downtown scaled for many times the number of people who live in it. The visitor figure is the village's own assertion in a funding application.
The ferry is the measurable part of that. Federal data for 2018 records 1,024,204 passengers and 448,775 vehicles across the two directional segments of the Bridgeport to Port Jefferson route, a fifteen mile crossing averaging seventy five minutes.
The waterfront is zoned for that working relationship, with three separate marina waterfront districts written into the village code.
The friction is old and documented. The village's comprehensive plan traces a downtown parking deficiency to a 1965 study that identified a shortfall of 650 off street spaces, and parking remains a spending priority for the business improvement district.

A village that decides who gets to trade.
The village's adopted comprehensive plan describes the downtown's success in one phrase, a dining destination with a variety of restaurants, cafes and bakeries, and sets out to retain local, village scale retail.
The same plan recommends restricting formula retail and restaurant uses. That is an explicit policy against national chains, written into the document that guides land use decisions.
Zoning turns that into a permission process. In the Central Commercial district, restaurants, take out restaurants, bars and taverns are conditional uses requiring Planning Board approval, with distance requirements from homes and from each other. Banks, retail stores, personal services and professional offices are permitted as of right.
The plan also records what the downtown lacks, finding no significant convenience shopping such as a hardware store or liquor store, and identifying demand for a specialty grocery.
The village states that more than 250 businesses operate in Port Jefferson. That figure is undated on the village's own page.
The chamber names four key industries for the village: health and wellness, real estate, water recreation and transportation, and food and restaurant.
Two hospitals sit at the edge of a very small village. Mather Hospital on North Country Road is a Northwell Health member and a teaching hospital.
St. Charles Hospital on Belle Terre Road now operates as a campus of Good Samaritan University Hospital within Catholic Health, with accredited rehabilitation, orthopaedics, maternity and paediatrics.
The village treats both hospitals, together with Stony Brook University, as its anchor employment base and as its largest source of young professionals looking for housing. That is the village's own characterisation.
Four separate bodies coordinate the business district: the BID, the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber, a Business Retailers Association and a Restaurant Association.
Practically, the policy against chains is a marketing condition and not only a planning one. Almost everything trading here is independent, so no national brand equity arrives with the sign above the door and no corporate media budget sits behind it. What a visitor decides is decided on the strength of the business's own listing, photographs and pages, which is why the website has to do the persuading that a familiar logo would otherwise have done for free.
The ferry timetable and the parking shortfall shape the rest of it. Demand lands in concentrated bursts that no single business can smooth out, and a visitor who cannot park has been lost before any of the marketing gets its chance.
