Long Island Generative Engine Optimization

Get Recommended By The AI Your Buyers Ask.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) makes your business the answer ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot give when someone asks who to hire.

Why It Matters

Search stopped being a list of links.

A growing share of buyers never see a results page. They ask an assistant a question and act on the answer — one recommendation, no page two, no chance to out-rank anyone. If the model does not know who you are, you are not in the consideration set at all. GEO is how you get into it.

1

answer, not ten links

An AI assistant returns a short list — often a single recommendation. Position eleven does not exist. You are either cited or invisible.

0

clicks required

Zero-click answers now resolve a large share of research queries. The brand named inside the answer wins the trust before any website is opened.

5+

engines to be found in

ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot each retrieve differently — but they reward the same underlying structure.

Now

is the cheap window

Most local competitors have done nothing here. The entity and schema work that earns citations is far less contested than page-one rankings.

What GEO Covers

Six levers that decide whether a model cites you.

Answer engines are not guessing. They pull from structured data, from what the wider web says about you, and from pages written in a format that can be lifted cleanly into an answer. These six levers control all of it.

AI Visibility Audit

We run the prompts your buyers actually type across every major engine and record who gets named, what gets said about you, and which sources the model credits. That baseline is the whole strategy — everything after it is closing a measured gap.

Entity Optimization

A model has to be certain who you are before it will recommend you. We make your name, location, services, and ownership consistent across your site, Google Business Profile, directories, and every profile the web has on you.

Structured Data

LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, Article, Review, and Breadcrumb schema wired across your key pages — the machine-readable layer that tells an engine exactly what you do, where you do it, and who vouches for it.

Answer-Ready Content

Pages built around the questions buyers ask, answering each one directly in the first two sentences, with specifics, numbers, and named examples underneath. That is the shape a model can quote without rewriting.

Citation Building

Models weight what other credible sites say about you far more than what you say about yourself. We build presence in the directories, review platforms, industry roundups, and local publications the engines already trust.

Crawler Access & llms.txt

A published llms.txt, a clean sitemap, server-rendered content, and a robots.txt that does not accidentally lock out GPTBot, PerplexityBot, or Google-Extended. Being quotable starts with being readable.

How We Work

Baseline. Structure. Publish. Track.

GEO is measurable or it is astrology. Every engagement starts with a recorded baseline of what the engines say today, so every change afterward can be judged against it.

01

Baseline

We build the prompt set your buyers actually use, run it across every major engine, and record who is named, how you are described, and which competitors own the answer today.

02

Structure

Schema implementation, entity and profile cleanup, crawler access, llms.txt, and a rebuild of your key pages into answer-ready format. This is where most of the movement comes from.

03

Publish

A steady cadence of content aimed squarely at the prompts you are losing — plus the off-site citations, reviews, and third-party mentions that give a model a reason to believe it.

04

Track

Monthly re-runs of the same prompt set, share-of-voice by engine, AI referral traffic in GA4, and the leads that came in already knowing your name. Then the next gap gets picked.

GEO vs. SEO

Same foundation. Different finish line.

SEO wins you a position. GEO wins you the citation. They share the plumbing — crawlable, fast, well-structured pages — but they are judged by different outcomes, and the tactics diverge past the foundation.

What SEO optimizes for

Ranking among ten blue links, measured in positions, impressions, and organic sessions. It rewards keyword coverage, internal linking, backlinks, and page experience, and the buyer still chooses from a list.

What GEO optimizes for

Being the source an answer quotes, measured in mentions per prompt, share of voice by engine, and how accurately you are described. There is no list to be on — you are in the answer or you are not.

What stays the same

Every answer engine draws from the indexed web. Fast pages, clean HTML, a valid sitemap, no orphan pages, no content hidden behind JavaScript. If a crawler cannot read the page, no model will ever cite it.

What changes

Keyword density stops mattering and entity clarity starts. Schema depth, quotable answer blocks, consistent facts across the web, and credible third-party corroboration carry the weight instead.

Why you run both

Classical search still drives most commercial traffic, and it feeds the index the models read. Dropping SEO to chase GEO removes the ground the citations stand on. See our SEO & content approach →

How they get reported

One read-out, two lenses: rankings, organic sessions, and conversions on the SEO side; prompt-level mentions, engine share of voice, and AI referral traffic on the GEO side — tied together by leads and revenue.

The Engines

Where the answers actually come from.

Each engine retrieves and credits sources differently. Knowing how each one builds an answer is what turns GEO from guesswork into a plan.

ChatGPT

Blends training knowledge with live retrieval. Brand recall depends on how consistently the web describes you; live answers depend on GPTBot being able to reach clean, well-structured pages worth quoting.

Google AI Overviews & AI Mode

Built on Google's index, so classic SEO strength carries over — but the citations skew toward pages with strong schema, clear headings, and a direct answer sitting near the top of the page.

Perplexity

Retrieval-first and aggressively cited, which makes it the fastest place to see GEO work land. Fresh, specific, source-worthy pages get picked up here within weeks, not quarters.

Gemini

Leans hard on Google's entity understanding — Business Profile data, Knowledge Graph presence, and consistent name, address, and phone details across the web decide whether it names you at all.

Microsoft Copilot

Draws on the Bing index, which most businesses ignore entirely. Bing Places, Bing Webmaster Tools, and Bing-side indexing are cheap wins that competitors have almost always skipped.

Claude and the next one

New assistants keep arriving, and none of them rewards a trick. They reward the same profile: unambiguous identity, structured facts, direct answers, and credible sources that agree with you.

FAQ

Straight answers about getting cited by AI.

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of making your business the source an AI answer engine cites. Instead of competing for a blue link on a results page, you are competing to be the company ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, or Copilot names when someone asks it who to hire. That takes machine-readable structure, a consistent entity footprint across the web, content written in a directly quotable format, and third-party sources the models already trust.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO optimizes for ranking — being one of ten links a person chooses from. GEO optimizes for citation — being the single answer a model gives when no list is shown. They share a foundation (crawlable, fast, well-structured pages) but diverge in tactics: GEO cares about entity consistency, schema depth, extractable answer blocks, and off-site corroboration far more than keyword density or link volume. In practice we run them together, because an answer engine will not cite a page a crawler cannot reach.

Do I still need SEO if I invest in GEO?

Yes. Classical search still drives the majority of commercial traffic, and every major answer engine draws from the same indexed web that SEO builds. GEO is not a replacement — it is the layer that protects you as more of the buying journey moves into AI answers. The efficient path is one program: technical and content SEO as the base, GEO as the layer that makes that base quotable. More on our SEO & content approach →

How do you measure GEO results?

We track a defined set of buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot, and record how often you are mentioned, how you are described, and which source the engine credits. Alongside that we watch referral traffic from AI assistants in GA4, branded search volume, and the leads that arrive already knowing who you are. The report answers one question: when a buyer asks an AI who to hire, how often does it say you?

How long does GEO take to work?

Technical work — schema, entity cleanup, crawler access, answer formatting — is usually reflected in AI answers within four to eight weeks, because retrieval-based engines like Perplexity and AI Overviews read the live web. Deeper shifts that depend on off-site citations and model training data take a quarter or more. Anyone promising you a mention next week is guessing.

Which AI engines do you optimize for?

ChatGPT and ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Claude. They differ in how they retrieve and cite, but they reward the same underlying profile: clean structure, unambiguous entity data, direct answers, and credible third-party corroboration. We optimize for that profile, then tune for the engines your buyers actually use.

Can you control what an AI says about my business?

Not directly, and anyone who claims otherwise is selling you something. What you can control is the evidence the model draws from: your own pages, your structured data, your business profiles, your reviews, and what credible third-party sources publish about you. Fix the inputs and the output moves. We have corrected wrong service areas, outdated hours, and stale positioning in AI answers by fixing the sources feeding them.

What is llms.txt and do I need one?

llms.txt is a plain-text file at the root of your site that gives AI systems a clean, structured summary of what you do and which pages matter. It is an emerging convention rather than a guaranteed ranking factor, but it costs almost nothing, it clarifies your entity to any model that reads it, and it forces a useful exercise: stating plainly what your business is. We publish one on our own site and we set one up for clients.

Should I block AI crawlers instead?

For a local service business, almost never. Blocking GPTBot, PerplexityBot, or Google-Extended removes you from the answers your buyers are reading while your competitors stay in them. Publishers with paid content have a real case for blocking; a business that wants to be recommended does not. We audit your robots.txt for accidental blocks, which we find more often than deliberate ones.

Does GEO work for local businesses?

It works especially well for them. Local prompts — “best HVAC company near Huntington,” “top rated dentist on Long Island” — are exactly the questions people now ask an assistant instead of typing into a search bar. The answers lean heavily on Google Business Profile data, reviews, local directories, and consistent name-address-phone information, all of which are fixable and all of which most competitors have neglected. See our Long Island local search work →

What does a GEO engagement actually include?

A baseline AI visibility audit across your buyer prompts and named competitors, an entity and citation cleanup, schema implementation across your key pages, restructuring of those pages into answer-ready format, an llms.txt and crawler-access configuration, an ongoing content cadence aimed at the questions buyers ask, and a monthly read-out showing prompt-level share of voice and the leads it produced.

How much does Generative Engine Optimization cost?

Pricing scales with scope — site size, how many prompts and engines we track, the state of your existing schema and profiles, and how much content we produce. We do not sell hours; we scope against the outcome you need. Book a strategy call → and we will give you a candid range for your situation on the first conversation.
